Our tax dollars at work

I am so frustrated at this very moment.

Uzz and I have a good relationship and since he has been working freelance, he pays me directly instead of money getting drafted out of a paycheck by the state and then getting sent to me. He has been getting nasty letters from the state for not paying them. This happens occasionally and when it does, I send in a special affadavit issued by the state that shows where he has been paying me directly. I sent a letter with the last affadavit telling them that it is not in my best interest to have to send the checks to them when he pays me. That just means that I have to wait another week or two for my money.

Well, this is the nasty letter I got from a rep of the State of Texas Attorney General Child Support Unit:

Per your recent correspondence, we have added payments to bring your case current. However, we are not able to properly work your case if you continue to receive payments directly. As part of our agreement to have the attorney general enforce your case, you agree to turn in any direct payments to our office so they may be credited to the account. Since you indicate it is in your best interest to receive payments directly, we will be closing our case.

Lovely. That is really nice. Thanks, state of Texas for helping me out. Now, I never anticipate not getting paid because he is really good to even pay me early if I'm strapped for money and ask him to. But, that isn't the point. The point is that the state is supposed to offer this service of child support assistance and they're pretty much blackmailing me. You can either send us the money and wait to get it back or we will never help you again if you need it. I called and spoke with another woman at the AG's office this morning and she agreed that the letter is a wee bit nasty and she said that the reason for it is because there is paperwork involved when I acknowledge payments through the affadavit. Well, so sorry that the bureaucracy requires paperwork. Guess what? I bet there is just as much paperwork when they take my check and send it back to me through their account. So, what is the big difference? Seems to me like it might be less work involved if they don't have to handle checks a couple of times a month and only an affadavit every few months.

That is a bunch of bullshit.

There's nothing quite as inefficent and malicious as a bureaucracy. I doubt you'd ever need them, but if you did, I think you could reapply. You won't be forever blackballed because you upset "Dennis" on the third floor.
