Another furry post
I gotta keep my furry readers on their toes, plus my non-furry readers have questions. So, furries, please answer and help us learn about this lifestyle.
1. What is skritching?
2. What is yiffing?
3. When you have "furry love" going on, how do you do it? With the suits on?
4. Do you frown on non-furries coming to your parties to see what it is all about? I'm so fascinated.
I suppose if I had some sort of animal alter-ego thing going on, I'm not sure what animal I'd be. I love penguins, but that is sort of gross. They're stinky and waddle. Not two traits I want to be known for. Hmm. Any ideas dear friends on what animal I would be if I were to be a furry?

Come on people. This is a perfectly healthy sexual outlet. All adults. No one is getting hurt (unless I suppose if they LIKE that sort of thing).
I did a tour this morning and this one girl looked EXACTLY like Jorja Fox (on the CSI theme). But, she said no one has ever said that to her before. She was identical. After I said that several folks all agreed. This woman had never seen CSI. *shaking my head*

it may be a "healthy outlet", but its definitely not normal...getting it on with an oversized Steiff bear goes into the abnormal column.

OK, I'll wade in here.
I'm on staff for an actual furry convention. I'm here to tell you that the real thing is nowhere near as exciting or as lurid as shows like CSI make it out to be.
First, let's start with the basics of furry fandom. The roots of furry fandom are in science fiction and in animation. It's the interest in the blending of human and animal to make something different - maybe better, maybe worse. We're talking speculative fantasy (no, not that kind of fantasy. Stop that). So that's the starting point.
From there, furry fandom has different areas of interest - anthropomorphic fiction (think Watership Down) and antropomorphic artwork (like Disney's Robin Hood). Yes, there are the costumes as well, but even the reality of that is less sexy than it's been depicted. Part of the attraction of a costume (like a mascot suit) is that it's a form or harmless role-playing: you put on this costume and you're someone else, who acts differently, sometimes cartoonishly. But it's for fun - to see smiles on the faces of those around you. Many costumers do work with hospitals and nonprofit agencies to bring a little happiness to those who might not have that in their lives at the moment.
The sex aspect? I won't say it's not there, but I will say that we're talking about a fraction of 1% of the costumers. I mean, really - sex in 10 yards of polyester fake fur? Good gods, you'd die of heat prostration. Unfortunately, that's what catches an outsider's eye, and that's what people learn about furry fandom.
All of that having been said, to answer the questions in the original article:
1. "Skritching" is a friendly backscratch.
2. "Yiffing" is slang for intercourse. In furry fandom, it's becoming regarded as juvenile slang, about as acceptible as telling one's co-workers you have to "make potty" or something.
3. Beats the hell out of me. Anything I might imagine sounds distinctly unpleasant to me (see above).
4. Furry conventions are open to the public, and you're certainly welcome to attend one! You'll of course have to register to get into the areas like the Dealers Room or the Art Show (just like any other convention). What will you find? Well, you won't find people writing around on the floor in dimly-lit rooms. What you'll generally find is about what you'd find at any science fiction convention - discussion panels on the genre, some excellent artwork, and friends just hanging out and enjoying themselves.
If you'd like to find out more about furry fandom, here's an excellent place to start. It's not my webpage, but it has some excellent links and descriptions of what furry fandom is and isn't.

A Furry - thanks for the info. I think it would be fun to go and observe all the fun stuff. And, I hear ya on the sexual part of it only being a small percentage of what it is all about. That makes sense. Uzz likes to fuss, but he used to be a Furry playing mascots at Chuck E. Cheese and at the Midland Angels games. No yiffing or skritching involved or at least none that I knew about. *snicker* And, yiffing is a term that isn't used often? Ok. Good information to know in case I ever go to one of these events and want to make sweet love down by the fire. I won't ask someone to yiff with/to me.

Well ... if it's something WHOLESOME ... I'm just not interested any more.

Not really wholesome. The sexual aspect is not a small percentage. AGNPH.com is a good example of a furry sexual site. You don't have to like it, you just be tolerant of other peoples practices and sexual pref. As long as its legal people will have to put up with it

Another good site into furry sexuality is yiffstar.com. It's a large collection of furry yiff stories and art, though there is non-yiff as well. Most furries want people to understand them, or themselves. The best way, in my opinion, is to type up a story that houses your desires and post it for others to see.
