I'm so not PC
Ok, the headline first caught my eye and made me giggle:
Clay Aiken May Serve Bush
*snickering* In case you didn't know, I'm pretty sure he's gay, so there isn't a lot of anything with "bush" going on with him.
But, then, I read the story and there is some new "Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities." Now, that is a pretty vague term. Personally, I think it could cover anyone from stupid people who don't yield on the roads to those who are truly suffering from some mental problem or head injury or something. Is retarded not an acceptable term anymore or are the connotations considered so bad that now they have "intellectual disabilities?" Apparently, this used to be the President's Committee on Mental Retardation. I dunno, I think the new term is too PC and people won't get it.

No, retarded isn't an acceptable word anymore. I was a job coach for people with physical and/or mental challenges and they were some of the best workers compared to the normal people that held the same position. I also have a niece that is mentally challeged. I think the the term Intellectual Disabilities is wonderful and puts their conditions right along others whereas in the past people with mental challenges were marginalized.
It's sorta like CAH and all the other words that go with it. The reachers not that a large than noraml amount of women with CAH are lesbians or Bi-sexual.

There is nothing retarded about my neice. Yes, there are some things she can't do but that also goes for many people that aren't given that label and leaving the retarded label in the past then opens opportunity to what someone really can accomplish. So yep - mentally challeged in some respect or having an intellectual disability is better

It's kinda like saying my adrenal gland is retarded ..get it?
Anyway like the U2 post down below - I love U2 ..everything by them. Was bopping to Billy Idol while shopping at Whole Foods Market - I'm old.

I guess I can see that. But, it just seems like it makes the category SOOOO wide. My cousin is autistic and so she qualifies for that label. But, my son, who is dyslexic ... does he qualify for the label? I would say yes because he has an intellectual disability, but he is nowhere near retarded. So, are they going to broaden the services and scope of services to people like him and your niece? Makes me wonder.
Thanks for your input.
